How to Help a Sore Throat?

You can also suffer from difficulty in swallowing food and liquids. Fever and chills, body aches, headache, nausea, and vomiting, sneezing, lack of appetite, weakness, runny nose, running nose or nasal congestion, cough, are the common symptoms of a sore throat. Ways to Help Sore a Throat:

1.) Salt Water Gargle to Cure a Sore Throat

Gargling with salt water is not about old wives, it is one of the best remedies to help a sore throat. Your throat gets hurt, this is because the cells in the mucous membranes have become swollen and inflamed. Gargling with salt water can decrease the swelling because a salt primary function is to draw out water. It shrinks the swollen cell and relief the pain caused by a sore throat. It helps to get rid of the excess mucus and drain your stuffy nose.

  • You need to mix half teaspoon of salt with an enough amount of warm water. If you don’t like the salty taste so you can also add some honey.
  • Garling with this salt solution, but make sure to not to swallow. Spit out the water. Then do gargle with the remaining water.

3.) Make a Mustard Plaster to Cure Sore Throat

A mustard plaster is very effective to soothe a sore throat and relieve congestion. It is mainly used to treat a deep cough and the soreness extends into your chest.

  • Mustard gives the warmth and circulation to the chest and throat area.
  • You just need to mix half teaspoon of mustard seed powder and one tablespoon of flour with enough amount of water to make a thick paste.
  • Spread this mixture on a paper towel. Put this towel in between two clean pieces of cotton such as dishcloth.
  • Plaster this on your chest and throat. Make sure that mustard mixture should not touch your skin.
  • Leave it for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until the skin becomes rosy and warm.

4.) Chamomile to Help a Sore Throat

Scientific research has shown that chamomile is a fragrant flowering herb that people has been using for centuries to help a sore throat and cold. It has a substance that fights infection and relaxes muscles. Drink a few cups of chamomile tea each day, if you have a sore throat will give you relief from throat pain and help you feel more relaxed. It gives more effectively taking it just before the bed. It will help you to sleep a little faster.

  • You can easily buy chamomile tea from the market it is easily available in the supermarket. Choose  box made with pure chamomile.

5.) Garlic to Cure Sore Throat

Garlic has antibacterial as well as antiseptic properties. It also has a power to fight infection and build up your immune system. It is very effective to help a sore throat.

  • You just need to take 2 garlic cloves and put them in a cup of boiling water. Then add a pinch of salt to make the drink even more effective.
  • You can also eat raw garlic to get the same benefit by simply peeling  a clove. Crush it and suck the juice for a few minutes.
  • You can also use garlic oil. Simply just add a one-fourth cup of water and gargle with it once a day.

6.) Honey-Cayenne Drink to Treat a Sore Throat

Honey is an important ingredient to include in teas and other drinks to help a sore throat. Studies have found that it coats the throat and ease inflammation and also help to suppress coughing. On the other hand, cayenne is another sore throat-fighting powerhouse. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, it is a natural substance which is found in pepper and works a pain reliever.

  • You need to add a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper and one teaspoon of honey and mix it with one cup of boiling water. Let the mixture get cool, then sip it slowly.
  • If you are very sensitive with hot pepper so you can reduce the amount of cayenne pepper to 1/8 teaspoon or even less.
  • You should not give honey to children under the age of 1-year-old because it can cause botulism.

7.) Turmeric to Get Rid of Sore Throat

It is a great remedy to help a sore throat. Turmeric is composed of three key compounds called desmethoxycurcumin, curcumin, and bis-desmethoxycurcumin. It also has several essential oils that impart its healing properties that work against a sore throat by inhibiting inflammation and provide relief symptoms like itching, burning, pain and swelling of the throat. It also has powerful anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

  • You need to mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder into a glass of warm water. Drink this solution empty stomach in the morning. Use this remedy two to three times a day.
  • Or you can take one teaspoon of turmeric powder and one teaspoon of black pepper with a glass of warm milk and drink it before going to bed.
  • You can also use another method, you can gargle with turmeric solution to help a sore throat. You need to add one-half teaspoon of salt and one-half teaspoon of turmeric powder with a glass of warm water and mix the solution properly. Gargle with this mixture twice a day.

8.) Marshmallow to Treat a Sore Throat

Marshmallow has a compound called mucilage, this is the main compound responsible for coating the throat and soothing a sore throat. It is great to help a sore throat along with a common cough and cold. This remedy is not effective for pregnant or nursing women or the people who are suffering from a diabetic.

  • You need to add one tablespoon of dried marshmallow root with one cup of boiling water and let it steep for about half an hour.
