Fleas are wingless, a creepy insect that can give you sleepless nights. They are a nuisance and can cause itchy sensations and even lead to an infection. They love to survive on warm vertebrates like cats, dogs, rabbit etc or even you can be their host. One reason of their presence in your house is that the eggs of fleas drop anywhere inside the house. These eggs then turn into larvae and then finally on a flea. There are many over the counter and prescription flea treatment products in the market and this product can help to fight the infestation. But it is important to keep in mind that such products have side effects. There are many natural flea control remedies that can safely be used in house and pet without any side effect to get rid of fleas in house.

Remedies to Get Rid of Fleas in House:

1.) Vacuum Everywhere to Get Rid of Fleas

You should vacuum on the areas which are untouched from the exposure to sunlight. Fleas like humid and cool spots and they grow up there. Before vacuuming the carpets, sprinkle salt, baking soda or borax throughout. Work it into the base of the carpets with a broom. Let it sit for a few hours because these powder will cause the flea eggs that are tucked deep into the carpet to dry out.

  • Don’t allow your pets to walk on the carpet while you are using this remedy because they may get some stuff on their paws and lick it off and this can cause them to get sick. Use baking soda if there is a chance the pet will walk on the carpet because it doesn’t sit on the surface and get on your pet’s paws.
  • When the vacuum bag will get full, seal it in a plastic trash bag and put it in a covered trash container because fleas can crawl out and again come in your house.

2.) Botanical Dust Mixed with Borate Acid

An adult flea can live only about a week without blood from its host, on the other hand, flea larva can live several months. It is also very safe to treat your house with the mixture of botanical dust and borate acid, they attack larvae as well.

  • Borate is a mineral that is widely used as a wood preservative, insecticides, detergent, acting as a stomach poison to fleas. It has low toxicity and it is also very safe to use around humans. Borate dust is the oldest natural insecticides.
  • While the mixture of borate and botanical dust is very safe. Take care to not to breathe it in. Wear a mask when applying the dust mixture in the home.
  • Dust the furniture, carpet, bed, cat or dogs bad, or all the possible areas. it is good to use this when you will be leaving your house for a good while almost about one or two days. When you will come back wash vacuum the sheets on the bed and leave borate mixture as a deterrent to future flea reproduction.

3.) Liquid Dish Soap to Kill Fleas

You can use liquid dish soap to get rid of flea infestation on your pets and around the house as it helps to dry the fleas exoskeleton. It is mainly good for kittens and young puppies.

  • Make a solution of liquid dish soap and give a bath to your pet with this warm water solution instead of your pet’s shampoo. Soak your pet in the bath for 10 to 15 minutes. The fleas will either die or fall off when your rinse your pet. Use this remedy for one or two weeks.
  • Or you can fill a water with two to three cups of hot water. Add one to two tablespoons of mild dish soap. Dip a flea comb in the solution of dish wash and use it to comb your pets hair. Dip the comb in the solution again if needed while doing this process. Use this method once a day to get rid of fleas in house.
  • Another method is if your house is infested, put a few drops of liquid dish wash soap in the bowl of hot water. place this bowl in the different room of your house and put a table lamp over it. Flea will attract from the warmth of the lamp and jump in the water, soap breaks the tension of the water. The fleas will not be able to get out and die there.

4.) Apple Cider Vinegar to Get Rid of Fleas in House

Apple cider vinegar is a very effective natural remedy. It controls the flea infestation in pets. It doesn’t kill the flea but they do not like its smell so they avoid hosts. It is also very safe to treat your pets and house from a flea.

  • Mix equal amount of water and apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle. You can also add three to four drops of cider or lavender oil to the mixture if you want, but it is not mandatory. Spray it on your pet and be sure to avoid spraying it in your pet’s eyes, nose and ear. Use this remedies daily to keep your pets and home safe from the flea.
  • Use this same solution and spray it on your baseboards, wooden floors, windowsills, carpet, furniture and other places where you suspect fleas. Spray it daily until you get relief from a flea.

5.) Salt to Get Rid of Fleas in House

Salt is a nontoxic and nonchemical ingredient that can be used safely indoors to fight fleas. Salt is a desiccant, it saps the moisture from the things and dried them out. when a salt crystal attaches from the flea, it causes scraping and chafing on the flea and dries out the fleas bodies and lead to death.

  • Use fine grained salt for this and sprinkle over the carpets, wooden floors and other possible infested areas.
  • Leave it for six to seven days, vacuum the salted area and make sure to pick up all the salt and carcasses from the carpet area. Repeat this process one or two times to get rid of fleas in the house.
  • When the vacuum bag will get full. Discard the old vacuum bag from the vacuum and replace it with a new one. Seal the old vacuum bag and discard outside the house.

6.) Indian Lilac to Kill Fleas

Indian Lilac is a natural remedy that can help to control flea infestation in your house as well as your pets. Cats are sensitive to Indian Lilac (neem), so don’t use it on your cats. The odor of the Indian Lilac plays a vital role to repel unwanted pests. You can use both leaf and oil of Indian lilac to get rid of fleas in house.

  • Take 4 cups of hot water and put a handful of neem leaves. Let it sit for overnight, then grind the leaves in the water next morning. Strain the mixture using filter paper or cheese cloth. Pour a solution in a spray bottle and spray it on your dogs or breeding floor.
  • Or you can mix 12 drops of Indian lilac oil 1 ounce of water and pour it in a spray bottle. Spray this solution on the infected area or you can soak your dog’s collar in this solution for several hours.
  • Dilute the neem oil with water or almond oil. Place the solution on your palms and gently rub it through your dog’s fur.
  • You can also bathe your dog  by adding a little bit of neem oil into pet shampoo.

7.) Lemon to Get Rid of Fleas in House

Lemon is very effective and natural remedy to get rid of fleas in the house. It can kill the existing flea and the eggs. Moreover, it will not cause any harm to your pets as well.

  • Slice a lemon into thin pieces.
  • Place it into a pan of water and bring it a boil.
  • Strain the solution in a filter paper and pour it into a spray bottle.
  • Spray the solution to all the infested area and also on your pet and be careful to avoid the eyes, nose and ear.
  • Use this remedy until you get relief.

8.) Cedar Woods Chips to Kill Fleas

Cedar wood chips are very effective to get rid of fleas from infesting your yard. Fleas hate the smell of cedar wood chips. It is all natural which makes of not harmful for your pets or nearby plants.

  • You can buy cedar wood chips from the market.
  • Spread them over the affected area in your yard, dog bedding, under the porch and outside furniture.
  • You can even place it in a cotton cloth and place it over the infected area inside your house and a dog bed to keep it pest- free.

9.) Rosemary to Get Rid of Fleas in House

Fleas are not very fond of rosemary so it works as a natural remedy to get rid of fleas in house. Moreover, it is good for your pet hair.

  • Boil a large pan of water and add two cups of fresh rosemary in it and let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Strain the liquid with the filter paper.
  • Mix the solution into 1 gallon of warm water and allow it cool.
  • Spray the solution on the infested area
  • Or you can grow rosemary in your garden.

10.) Diatomaceous to Get Rid of Fleas in House

Diatomaceous earth is commonly known as DTE. It helps to combat a flea infestation in your home. the sharp particles of DTE can penetrate the fleas the thin waxy layer of coating, which can cause them to dehydrate and die of water deficiency. It is safe for human and animals.

  • First vacuum areas in your house where you think fleas may be present. Then sprinkle a layer of DE powder in the infested areas. allow it sit for 12 hours , then vacuum again. Repeat a process once a week for two to three weeks to get rid of fleas in house.
  • DE can also be used to control flea infestation in your garden, where they breed and multiply. Sprinkle the powder in your yard when the weather outside is dry.
  • Wear a dust mask when applying this product, as it can irritate the lungs.
