  • Once you have trimmed or cut your nails, file the sharp edges down so that they can become smooth. Use a rough file to finish smoothing of the edges.
  • Use a nail buffer to file and buff your nails.

2.) Peeling to Take Off Gel Nail Polish at Home

Some gel nail polish can be easily peeled off. So instead of buffing and filing your nails, you can strip the polish by simply peeling. You will see chipping after a week of the polish.

  • If your nails are not chipping by themselves then use an orange stick or cuticle stick to dig under the gel polish and lift it up. Don’t dig too hard. If you will use this method then you can use some oils or conditioning fluid to nourish your nails.

  • Take 2 small bowls, fill them with warm water and a drop of dish soap in each bowl. Putting 1 tsp of salt in each bowl is also a good ingredient.
  • Wash your hands and put your hands in each small bowl and wait for the 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Now use a hand towel to wash your hands, file them, buff them and peel them to get the nail polish off.
  • You can also remove your nail polish with a small amount of nail polish remover.

4.) Acetone to Remove Gel Nail Polish

Acetone is the chemical that will react with the gel nail. It will loosen the glue and free it from natural nail. It is the common ingredient in remover but to remove the gel, you need acetone to remove the gel nail polish.

Directions to Use Acetone:

  • Take a bowl and fill it with acetone. Use plastic or foil to cover the bowl.
  • Hold the cover in place with the help of a rubber band.
  • Put the acetone in a bowl of warm water, so that the acetone can warm up.
  • Allow it to sit for 5 minutes. To prevent overheating, remove the acetone from the outer bowl.
  • Acetone will dry out and can damage your skin, so it is important to protect your nails with a layer of jelly. Instead of using petroleum jelly, you can use balm or lotion.
  • Use a cotton swab and dip it in the petroleum jelly and apply it around the edges of your nails. Now, cover your fingers just below your top knuckles.
  • Dip a cotton ball in acetone and hold it against your nail and wrap it in aluminum foil to fix it in the place.
  • Allow your nails to soak in acetone for half an hour.
  • If acetone does not irritate your skin, you can dip your nails in the bowl instead of using aluminum foil. But don’t soak them for half an hour.
  • Remove the cotton ball and foil from the nails. Use a cotton ball to swipe off the gel.
  • Wash off the nails and use a nail filer to file the nails.
