How to Get Rid of a Toothache?

This article is about remedies to get rid of a toothache. A toothache which is also known as dental pain is basically a moderate or severe pain in the gums or supporting structures which occur  due to any injury, infection in the teeth or gums of the mouth cavity. It is the most common type of orofacial pain and when severe, it is considered as a dental emergency. A toothache may lead an impact on sleep, eating and other daily activities as well. It happens when the central region of the gum, which is known as pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to several reasons.

If you have a toothache, it is best to seek immediate advice from a dentist before the problem becomes worse. You can also try some natural remedies to get rid of a  toothache. This dental disease also causes pain to the neighboring teeth as well. There can be many reasons for a toothache. You can get rid of a toothache in several ways even at home by applying some home remedies. If still, you don’t get rid of a toothache, one may need to rush to the doctor.

Causes of a Toothache:

  • Food trapped in a cracked tooth along with debris may cause bacterial infection. It leads to decay of teeth and makes the gums, loose therefore cause severe pain in the gums.
  • Infected gum is also an another factor for this dental disease. Bacterial attack or acidosis destroy the teeth and causes infection in the teeth.
  • Tooth cavity which is majorly caused due to oral infection. It is because of not proper cleaning or brushing of teeth. Also, the frequent eating habits by some people cause cavities in teeth.
  • Inflammation of the pulp, usually in response to tooth decay, dental trauma, a hypersensitivity which causes a toothache.

Symptoms of a Toothache:

  • Teeth become sensitive to hot and cold food.
  • Decay the root of the teeth and inflated gums cause a severe toothache.
  • A sharp pain during chewing of food.
  • Sensitivity in the gums.
  • Inflammation of the pulp.
  • Bleeding or discharge from or around a tooth or gum.
  • Pain in chewing

Remedies to Get Rid of a Toothache:

Having a toothache? What should be done?  There are several remedies to get rid of a toothache. In case of a horrifying toothache one should rush to a doctor or can apply some remedies which can provide relief as per below:

1.) Remove the Trapped Food to Get Rid of a Toothache

This is the first step which is to be done. In a case of a toothache, clean your teeth by using a mild brush and toothpaste. The quality of brush and toothpaste should be good.  Now carefully and gently do dental floss between the two teeth and dislodge any food particles. Pull the floss in to and fro motion between the two teeth. Now wash your mouth by using warm water. Spit the water out when done. Repeat this process  in case proper cleaning is not done.

2.) Apply a Cold Compress to Cure Toothache

This is an another quick way to get rid of a toothache. One can use ice wrapped in a piece of cloth and apply on the jaw line of the infected area. Take 3-4 ice cubes and wrap it in the piece of cloth. Now apply it on the jaw line. Apply it for 10 to 15 minutes. Take a break and again apply for the same. The lower temperature will slow down the blood flow in the vessels and you will experience a less toothache.

3.) Salt and Pepper to Get Rid of a Toothache

Salt and pepper also help in reducing the pain. It has been proven a good element in getting rid of a toothache. Salt and pepper kill the bacteria by the process of osmosis. Take salt with some pepper and make a paste by using water or olive oil. The amount of pepper should be less than salt. Apply this paste on the infected area. It may cause some harsh sensation, but after some time it will cure the pain.

4.) Cloves to Prevent Toothache

Using of cloves is an ancient method to get rid of a toothache. It can be used in many ways like one can take a piece of clove and keep it in the mouth for some time in an infected area and throw it away after some time. Another way is, take 2-3 cloves and make a paste by using water. Now place it against the sore area. This will work as an anesthesia and will provide a relief in a toothache. After keeping it for some time one gets relief from a toothache.

5.) Garlic or Onion to Get Rid of a Toothache

Both garlic and onion have anti-bacterial and medicinal properties which can be effective in reducing pain. One can make a paste of garlic or onion with salt by using some amount of water and apply to the infected area. By doing so, it can cure the pain. You can also cut small pieces of onion and garlic and can also chew the clove of garlic if possible. Repeat this method  for 3-4 days. It will help a lot in getting rid of a toothache.

6.) Ginger and Cayenne to Cure Toothache

Ginger and Cayenne have medicinal values that help in the curing of pain. Mix equal parts of these two spices with enough water to make a paste. Take a cotton ball and put some paste on it. Put that cotton ball in the infected area, avoiding your gums and teeth. Leave it until the pain fades or as long as you can keep it. You can also use this paste separately. They act as potent painkillers and help in relieving the pain.

7.) Asafoetida to Get Rid of a Toothache

A toothache or other dental problems can be treated at home by using Asafoetida. It is antispasmodic so has a medical or antibacterial value. Add some pinch or half teaspoon of Asafoetida and mix it with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Take a cotton pad and apply to the infected area. This will give instant result and helps in getting rid of a toothache.

8.) Peppermint Leaves to Prevent Toothache

Peppermint leaves can be used in the treatment of a toothache. It has many therapeutic values. During a toothache, take some fresh leaves of peppermint leaves. Wash them properly. Now try to chew these leaves with the affected  area. It would be difficult to chew it because of immense pain. If one does not have fresh leaves, they can take dry leaves also. After chewing these will level of pain will reduce. It will help a lot to get rid of a toothache.

9.) Baking Soda to Get Rid of a Toothache

Baking Soda can also help in getting rid of a toothache. It helps in cleaning of the mouth and prevents further bacterial attack. It is very efficient and simple method. Take one tablespoon of baking soda and mix it with water to make a paste. Now take a cotton ball and put some paste on it and apply it on the infected area. If you don’t want to place a cotton ball, you can also use a solution of baking soda in water and rinse your mouth with the solution.

10.) Lemons to Get Rid of a Toothache

Lemons helps in getting rid of a toothache. It contains citric acid, which helps in a killing of bacteria, reduces pain and prevents the tooth decay. The acidic value of lemon helps in the killing bacteria. Take a slice of lemon and put it on the affected area. One can also use lemon juice and add a bit of salt. Drop the solution on the infected area and it will surely reduce pain.

11.) Guava Leaves to Prevent Toothache

Guava leaf is a wonderful natural product to cure a toothache. These leaves have an antibacterial element which helps in getting rid of a toothache. One can use guava leaves to get rid of a toothache.  Take some fresh guava leaves and crush them into pieces. Now make a paste by using water  and apply it on the affected area. One can also chew the leaves directly if possible. You will get a relief in a toothache.

12.) Black Pepper to Get Rid of a Toothache

Black pepper has an anesthesia value. It can be used to get rid of a toothache. Take some seeds of black pepper and keep in the mouth on the affected area. You can also grind some seeds and make a paste with the help of a little water. Apply this paste with the help of cotton ball in the affected area and you will get relief within a few minutes.

  • In the case of severe pain, immediately rush to a dentist.
  • Brush teeth, two times a day
  • Apply home remedies carefully.
  • Maintain proper hygiene.
  • Go for a regular dental check up.
